MLK Day

Today I had planned on doing a Makeup Monday post but last minute decided that I would honor one of my favorite leaders Martin Luther King Jr on MLK day!

Today is actually his birthday which is most fitting that this year marks 50 years since his assassination as well. I personally grew up learning about all of the injustices that African Americans have experienced in the past 200 years let alone during the Civil Rights movement. During this time period so many people experienced such horrendous and heinous crimes that majority of the perpetrators didn't even have justice for performing. 

But those crimes and times were not anything I had ever experienced on my own but knew of from my family members and ancestors. But I still am and was eternally grateful for them and their sacrifices so that I could experience the liberties and amazing opportunities I could experience today. 

I was the first one in my family to graduate from college while being the eldest of 9 children in a low-income family. 

I say this not to boast but to exemplify that my ancestors and all of the amazing leaders during the Civil Rights movement were able to pave the way with resilience and perseverance that the injustices they experienced they did not want they're children and grandchildren to experience.......

Fast forward to today in 2018.....

Where majority of the minority citizens in this country have felt that they're elected leader does not hold the same principals and ethics that we hold so dear. Which I didn't realize I took for granted until the election last year. But I digress.....

My main point of this post is to encourage everyone to be more aware and to take conscious and actionable steps  when they see injustice. Speak up!

As I believe it doesn't have to be a big group of people standing up for a cause but just 1. ONE. One person can make a difference... Ask Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. His dream and tenacity alone has forever changed my whole life's trajectory in comparison to what a young African American's woman life would have been like 50 years ago!!
